A trip in a church van filled with at least 14 people — six kids and eight adults — turned tragic Sunday evening in Hyattsville, Maryland after it slammed into a pickup truck that had crossed onto the wrong side of the road after hitting a passenger vehicle.
According to Fox News, at least 14 people amidst the three vehicles were injured, eight of them critically. Four people, including the driver of the pickup truck, were killed.
Donald Huff, a nearby resident, said the pickup truck, which came to rest alongside the church van, burst into the flames. A couple people ran to the scene with fire extinguishers and tried "to get as close as they could, but it was a little too much."
Another witness described the heroic efforts bystanders who braved the nearby flames to pull people out of the van. Firefighters soon arrived to douse the blaze.
The Prince George County Fire Department's spokesman Mark Brady described the accident scene as one of the worst he's seen in 40 years, and said that firefighters who were on scene were later "met with by counselors to make sure everyone was OK after dealing with an incident involving so many people, so many injuries and fatalities."
The names of the victims and their church has not been released, but please pray for them, their families, and the families of those who lost their lives.
