CNN’s attacks on President Trump are often obvious, but in the case of a report they aired Monday, sometimes they’re — slightly — more subtle. On the same day as an ISIS-inspired attempted suicide bombing in New York City, CNN decided to delve into whether President Trump’s “super crazy’ soda drinking habit is harming his brain.

There’s a rumor flying around that Trump drinks 12 cans of Diet Coke a day. The New York Times reported it as fact on Saturday, according to the Washington Post, and it’s not the first time they’ve made that claim.

But on Monday, in the midst of breaking news about the terrorist who reportedly sent a message to Trump before attempting to kill himself and innocent bystanders, CNN decided to question Trump’s health, according to Fox News.

Addressing The Times story about the president’s alleged 12-drinks-a-day habit, CNN host Brooke Baldwin brought in board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Samantha Nazareth to ask her about the effects of that much Diet Coke on Trump’s body. But in Baldwin’s opening statement, it was clear she wasn’t just referring to the president’s physical health but making an entirely different suggestion to her viewers as well.

“If we’re saying, according to The Times, that he drinks this many, what does this do to the brain and the body every day?” Baldwin asked.

But Nazareth refused to follow her lead. In her answer, the doctor didn’t say a single thing about high consumption of soda negatively affecting Trump’s brain, and she refused to confirm Baldwin’s assertion that large amounts of diet soda did great harm to his body as well. Nazareth simply stated that drinking that many soft drinks encourages people to drink less water and think that they’re free to consume junk food without negative health consequences.

Gesturing to her display of 12 Diet Cokes lined up, Baldwin asked the doctor, “Is this doing anything super crazy harmful, or is it just me, and I’m not getting enough water? Does this do anything to your bladder, your kidneys, or anything—”

“Not necessarily,” Nazareth cut in.

CNN’s failed attack on Trump’s mental health brought in a host of criticism. Conservative media analyst Mark Dice roundly mocked it in a video entitled “CNN Proves They Are Completely Worthless.”

Media Research Center Vice President Dan Gainor told Fox News, “U.S. News was talking about the bombing at 7:54. Nearly an hour later, CNN is whining about Donald Trump drinks Diet Cokes and watches too much TV instead of reporting about terrorism in New York City. CNN might tell you what it's giving you is an apple, but if it is, it's rotten.”

Others took to social media to express their frustration at CNN’s report.

Liberal attacks on Trump’s mental health are not uncommon. For instance, Joe Scarborough of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” recently suggested Trump has dementia, the Washington Examiner.
