A woman in Canada, Kori Doty, who chooses not to identify as a man or a woman, is contesting a perfectly reasonable law that requires her baby to have a gender in order to have a birth certificate. Instead of referring to her baby according to biological gender, Doty ignores the rules of grammar and calls her child “they” and “them.”
In a concerning statement, Doty shares her parenting philosophy with Newsweek. "I'm raising Searyl in such a way that until they have the sense of self and command of vocabulary to tell me who they are, I'm recognizing them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be the most whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box.”
But authorities in British Columbia aren’t going along with Doty’s plan; they are refusing to hand one over until Doty confirms the gender of the child.
Doty says she objects to doctors deciding the gender of a child when they’re born because the assessment in her case was “wrong.” Showing a concerning lack of understanding, she says “When I was born, doctors looked at my genitals and made assumptions about who I would be, and those assignments followed me and followed my identification throughout my life.”
Doty has joined the Gender-Free ID Coalition, and she is seeking a judicial review of her baby’s birth certificate. She is among a group of eight Canadians who want to change the gender on their birth certificate, so it no longer reflects their biological gender.
In a column for The Blaze, blogger Matt Walsh points out how ridiculous this case is, "In saner times, the child would be removed from the home and the mother committed to a mental health facility, but we do not live in those times. Now, all we can do is sit back and watch as an entire generation is cannibalized by the LGBT agenda."
If Doty wins her case, how long will it be until it is illegal to declare anyone’s gender? We’re walking down a path that leads to a complete disregard of science, and a breakdown of gender and the traditional family. How long will the left continue to treat a mental illness like it is a human right?
As Walsh points out, the issue here is that the child is being used to make a point. "Here’s what I wish these hopelessly “progressive” parents could grasp: your children are not social experiments. They are not lab rats. They are not fashion statements. They are not mere anecdotes to be used in advancing your anti-science agenda," says Walsh. "They are human beings and they have needs. A lot of needs. They need love. They need direction. They need guidance. They need clarity. If you will not give them these things, you are a danger to them."
You could hope that child would stand up for the child's mental health, but their track record leads me to believe they'll probably allow genderless birth certificates. Please pray for the child—that this issue is resolved and that her mother's actions don't have a long-term impact on the infant's life.
