A star quarterback from the NFL was under fire on Wednesday, October 4th for his “sexist” response to a female reporter. During a media appearance, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was asked a specific question about the routes of his fellow wide receivers.

Jourdan Rodrigue, a reporter for a North Carolina news outlet called the “Charlotte Observer,” asked Newton, “I know you take a lot of pride in seeing your receivers play well. Devin Funchess [Panthers wide receiver] has seemed to really embrace the physicality of his routes and getting those extra yards. Does that give you a little bit of enjoyment to see him truck-sticking people?”

Newton’s first reaction—a chuckle.

Then, the quarterback responded, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes...like it’s funny,” as he continued mildly laughing. Later on, Rodrigue issued a reply to Newton directly via social media saying, it’s not “funny,” but it’s “my job.”

Newton’s remark quickly became very controversial and people are divided on his word choice—despite their gender or political beliefs. Half of the media was angry and offended by his comment, insinuating that the quarterback was being “sexist.” On the other hand, people implied that the Left is being hypocritical and the situation shouldn’t have been that big of a deal to begin with.

Regardless, Newton, unfortunately, lost his gig with Dannon yogurt as a result, which he has been in an endorsement deal with since 2015. Sports Illustrated reported that Newton was the center of multiple greek yogurt commercials, which often aired during NFL games.

ABC News released an official statement from Dannon’s senior director of external communications, which claimed the company was “shocked and disheartened” by Newton’s behavior. Dannon perceives his comments as, “sexist and disparaging to all women.”

He continued, “It’s simply not ok to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerns with Cam and will no longer work with him.”
