As a pastor to alcoholics and drug addicts and the mentally challenged, Tim Remington of Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho knows that when dealing the lost who are at the end of their ropes, things can get messy.
But despite multiple threats to his life, Remington refused to give up on his flock. And it appears God has preserved his life for further work after Remington was shot on Sunday six times by someone he had ministered to. Miraculously, despite being shot in the head (the bullet glanced off his skull instead of entering his brain) and his lung, Remington's condition is stable and has even been upgraded to fair. Just a day earlier, Remington had delivered the invocation for Ted Cruz at his northern Idaho rally.
As for the shooter, ex-Marine Kyle Odom, his story is a shocking downward spiral into madness.
According to the Spokesman-Review, after shooting Remington six times in the back Sunday afternoon, Odom drove south to Boise before taking a flight to Washington, D.C, where he was arrested by Secret Service agents after throwing his "Martian manifesto" over the White House fence.
A reading of his bizarre yet surprisingly well-written and formatted manifesto (Parental warning: Frightening and inappropriate material) reveals that the beginning of his journey started two years ago while dealing with a heavy course load at the University of Idaho. To handle the stress, he turned to meditation and achieved "extreme states of consciousness." The tale that follows as he tumbles into a truly frightening, psychotic existence is enough to make one wonder if this otherwise intelligent man was dabbling in the realm of the demonic.
He claims to have accepted an offer from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to work on his PhD in human genetics but left the program before completing it because he couldn't concentrate on his work. That's when he came into contact with Altar Church in Idaho. Soon after meeting Pastor Remington, though, he says songs and voices tortured him as he slept and other people tortured him telepathically and telekinetically when awake.
Not long later, he began seeing Remington's true form as a Martian. That's when he began to believe that he was surrounded by numerous Martians in human form who were manipulating him. In fact, he believed they already lived inside the earth and the moon and had infiltrated the highest levels of U.S. and Israeli government.
After trying to kill Remington, Odom threw his manifesto onto the White House lawn, which included a list of congress members like Mitch McConnell, Elizabeth Warren, and Nancy Pelosi who he believed to be Martians.
Odom's family spoke, saying, “We are thankful for the safe apprehension of our son Kyle. As Kyle was not living with us, we are learning of his plans as they are being released by police. We are truly thankful to God he is safe and no one else has been injured.”
Members of Altar Church who knew Odom were also praying for his safe arrest.
