Oklahoma is on the brink of doing something no other state has done: Make abortion absolutely illegal.
ABC News reports that the bill would make it a felony to perform in abortion in the state, and any doctor who aborts an unborn child would be stripped of their license and face up to three years in prison.
State Rep. Nathan Dahm, who wrote the bill, said, "Since I believe life begins at conception, it should be protected, and I believe it's a core function of state government to defend that life from the beginning of conception.”
Not surprisingly, abortion advocates are outraged, calling the first-in-the-nation measure unconstitutional. The bill now heads to Gov. Mary Fallin to see if she will sign it.
