In the beginning of October, an Amber Alert was issued for 3-year-old Sherin Mathews. The young girl went missing at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, October 7 near her Texas home.
Sherin's father, 37-year-old Wesley Mathews, had reportedly sent the toddler outside after she refused to drink her milk. According to the police, Mathews had admitted that he had seen coyotes in a nearby alley.
Mathews told police that he had forced the young girl to stand next to a large tree behind the fence of their backyard. He said that he went outside to check on her after about 15 minutes. By that point, she had disappeared.
Rather than immediately contacting police, Mathews waited several hours before beginning a search. Records show that he did not file a police report until after 8 a.m.
The tree that Sherin was standing next to was near both a coyote-infested alley and some railroad tracks. Immediately after the report was filed, police confiscated three cars, cellphones, and laptops from the family in order to find out more information. The Texas State Child Protective Services also removed another 4-year-old child from the parents' care.
Police had arrested Wesley Mathews on child abandonment and endangerment charges the day that Sherin went missing. He has since been released on bail, but later stopped cooperating with detectives.
For the last three weeks, police have been searching for the young girl. Now, 3-year-old Sherin Mathews' body may have been found. Police reportedly uncovered a small child's body in a culvert less than a mile from her home.
A police spokesman said that investigators believe the body found belongs to Sherin Mathews and that they have no reason to believe it would belong to another missing child. They are awaiting positive identification and an autopsy to confirm.
Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey tweeted, "Worst news finding child's body." He did say, however, that if the body belongs to Sherin he would be "happy [it has been] recovered so properly laid to rest."
While nothing has been confirmed, the medical examiner said that "it is most likely" Sherin's body.
