A state-wide Amber Alert was issued for a 10-year-old girl named Kiaya Campbell near the Denver area in Thornton, Colorado on June 7th of 2017. The Amber Alert was shortly cancelled after her body was found just a few miles away during the massive search that contained hundreds of volunteers.
According to the Denver Post, she went missing after walking to a shopping center with a 15-year-old boy (the son of her father's girlfriend) before they got separated in a ‘heavy rain storm’. Police originally believed she could have been 'swept away' in the storm. However, neighbors stated to authorities that the storm was not strong enough to do so. This information led Kiaya's death to be investigated as a homicide.
Her death was described as "other than accidental". The 15-year-old boy, who has been verified as the son of Kiaya's father's girlfriend, was arrested and charged. Police originally did not reveal his name since he is a juvenile, but he was identified as Aidan Zellmer (see photo below; Aidan is on the right) in his first court appearance, according to CBS News. His father (middle) is a very, religious man and had an interesting response when questioned before entering the courtroom (see video below).
His charges have been released. The Denver Post reported the teenage boy is being charged with first-degree murder with intent to kill. Prosecutors are also seeking to charge him as an adult, given the circumstances. His first hearing is set to take place on June 30th of 2017. The reasoning and other details regarding the murder are currently unknown. Authorities have continuously mentioned there are many unanswered questions to this case.
