Health authorities are scrambling to determine the possible cause of a deadly virus that has now infected 44 people in Wisconsin, leading to 18 deaths. News of the outbreak has now been reported by ABCNews.
The virus, known as Elizabethkingia, appears to primarily affect people over 65 who have had at least one other serious health challenge. With the growing older population, many of whom have had at least one serious health challenge by that age, there are millions of people across the US who could be potentially affected.
The results have been monitored over 3 months. Previously, at most 10 cases might be reported in a state per year, so this is the most serious outbreak ever encountered. Authorities are investigating possible causes, including drinking water or other possible contaminants.
