Meryl Streep used her position last night at the Golden Globes to attack Trump. But in the process, she also mocked two groups of hard-working athletes: football players and mixed martial arts fighters.
In a six minute speech bashing Trump as a bully who has vilified outsiders and foreigners, Streep said to her peers:
"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if we kick them all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts," Streep said, receiving huge applause.
Streep also criticized Trump for allegedly mocking a disabled reporter back in 2015. "It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie, it was real life," Streep said.
"This instinct to humiliate when it's modeled by someone in the public ... by someone powerful, it filters down into everyone's life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same."
Streep's passionate speech got immense approval from Hollywood. Ellen DeGeneres posted that she loved Streep. And Julianne Moore thanked Streep on her Twitter.
But not everyone is so happy with Streep's speech, especially her denigrating characterization of MMA fighters, reports CNN. Scott Coker, an MMA promoter and fighter, posted this open letter to Streep via Twitter.
What do you think of Coker's response to Streep? Let us hear your thoughts in the Comments! Thank you!
