ABC just brought up “Last Man Standing” again months after they canceled the popular show. At the time, fans accused the network of canceling the family show because the show itself portrayed conservative values, and because Tim Allen was vocal about his personal political beliefs.
Right before the show was canceled, Tim Allen spoke out in a Jimmy Kimmel interview, comparing being a conservative in Hollywood to living in Nazi Germany.
"You gotta be real careful around here. You get beat up if you don't believe what everybody else believes,” said Allen. “This is like '30s Germany."
At the news of the cancellation, fans were skeptical of the excuses the network gave because the show had been doing well.
However, ABC steadfastly stands by their position that they axed the show for reasons other than Allen’s conservative politics. During a Television Critics Association press tour appearance this week, ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey commented on the series.
“Politics had nothing to do with it,” she maintained.
She went on to claim that the network doesn’t care about people’s politics.
“We have actors on our shows who have all sorts of different political views,” explained Dungey. “Tim Allen is a valuable part of the Disney/ABC family. He has been for a very, very long time.”
Dungey also made vague claims about the show coming to an end because it had reached the end of being able to be renewed, and she also cited the fact that the network decided to remove all comedy shows from their Friday night lineup.
“Last Man Standing was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings, but once we made the decision not to continue with comedies on Fridays, that was where we landed,” she said.
Dungey concluded by once again reaffirming the network’s claim that the cancelation had nothing to do with Allen.
“But Tim Allen’s personal politics had nothing whatsoever to do with it,” she concluded.
Fans still aren't convinced. Tomi Lauren tweeted about the announcement today, and so did some others who are still questioning ABC.
