Joel Tayler, the reality star from Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chaser,” passed away Tuesday while on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, reportedly from a drug overdose. He was only 38.
According to TMZ, large quantities of party drugs were on board the ship, including cocaine, Ecstasy and the depressant GHB. Several people were arrested before the ship left the F. Lauderdale port.
According to that source, Taylor had been doing GHB late Monday night, continuing into Tuesday morning, dancing during a wild part. During Monday night, “Grease” star Olivia Newton-John was performing on the ship. Later, Taylor lapsed into unconsciousness and was carried into his cabin to be left there. Later that morning, he was pronounced dead.
“It appears the death could be an overdose and Joel Taylor was consuming controlled substances,” said law enforcement sources, according to Fox News.
Taylor’s fame stems from his career as a storm chaser for the Discovery Channel, which ran from 2008 to 2012 before the show was canceled. Before that, he studied meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. On the show, he served as a driver with friend and co-star Reed Timmer.
The reality show consisted of Taylor and Timmer chasing storms through Oklahoma’s Tornado Alley as the scientists tried to study the storm’s path and behavior. Tributes to his passing poured from friends through social media.
Team Western Oklahoma Chaser, a group that Taylor belonged to, also remembered him through a post that has since been taken down.
“He didn’t chase for the glory he chased because he had a true passion for storms. In the last few years he’d load up with his dad and go chase and not even take a camera. Our hearts are hurting for his mom Tracy and dad Jimmy along with his brother and sister and their children. Please know you are in our prayers. RIP Joel.”
