25-year-old Kara McCullough, a nuclear scientist, is being dubbed the “most intelligent Miss USA ever.”
But the Washington, D.C. contestant, who was crowned Sunday night, is being blasted by critics for not towing the liberal line.
According to the New York Post, when asked if she subscribed to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ claim that health care is a right, McCullough replied, “I’m definitely going to say it’s a privilege.
“As a government employee, I’m granted health care and I see firsthand that for one to have health care, you need to have jobs,” she added.
Then asked if she was a feminist, she made jaws drop by proclaiming, “I don’t want to call myself a feminist. Women, we are just as equal as men, especially in the workplace.”
Her comments launched a firestorm on social media, with some saying she should have been disqualified.
McCullough did add later, “I believe we’ve come a long way and there is more work to be done. I think domestically we are making progress and I do believe that we will become equal one day.”
