A New Jersey family is heartbroken after their 8-year-old daughter, Imani McCray, tragically took her own life only days before her birthday. Family members believe it could have been a copycat suicide.
NBC New York reported that Imani’s parents think she may have seen the suicide story about 10-year-old Ashawnty Davis on Facebook. Ashawnty hung herself in her closet after she was bullied at school for several months.
Imani was reportedly sent to her room for a timeout. When her parents found her, she was discovered hanging in her home, stated the New York Post.
However, NBC noted that there is no evidence that Imani was bullied leading up to the incident. It’s possible that this is a “case of tragic playacting.”
Paramedics arrived quickly and tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead shortly after at a nearby hospital on Sunday, December 10th.
This story is still developing and an investigation is underway. If additional details are released to the public, this article will be updated accordingly.
