As her car left the road and plunged down a steep embankment in rural Washington state, 70-year-old Sharon Leaming was almost certain her life was about to come to an end. And as her car came to rest deep in the underbrush and she began to feel the pain of a broken back and broken ribs, she knew the chances of anyone finding her in time were slim.
According to King 5, she had just a couple bananas, some pop tarts, and a small bottle of water within reach. And she knew no one would realize she was even missing for a couple days.
She honked her car’s horn repeatedly, trying to attract attention, but she was just too far down the densely vegetated hillside for anyone to notice. Eventually, her horn stopped working, and her cellphone remained frustratingly out of reach.
After two days, rescue crews began to search for her but found the process incredibly difficult in the heavily forested region. For five days Leaming lay in her crumpled car, using her meager water supply to keep her mouth just wet enough to repeatedly cry out for help.
Inside Edition reveals what happened next:
As for why Leaming drove off the road in the first place, it’s not been said, but her family said she is beginning to suffer from the early stages of dementia.
Praise the Lord they found her in time!
