Donald Trump was invited to be the convocation speaker today at Liberty University on Martin Luther King Day. Liberty University, started by the late Dr. Jerry Falwell, is the largest Christian university in the world and has over 100,000 students between online and on campus.
Jerry Falwell Jr., the University's President, gave a glowing introduction to Donald Trump. Here are 3 things Donald said (or didn't say!) that made news today.
1) He didn't criticize Ted Cruz -- or any of his fellow Republican candidates! In recent days there has been a lot of back and forth between Trump and Cruz, but in today's speech -- perhaps realizing Ted Cruz would be popular with the evangelical Christian audience -- Donald didn't utter a word about Ted Cruz.
2) He quoted a Bible verse -- but the way he said it made it apparent he may not spend a lot of time with the Bible. Trump quoted the Bible and referred to "Two Corinthians, 3:17" where most Christians would say Second Corinthians.
3) He said he would defend Christianity. Trump was met with very positive response during his speech, particularly when he said he would defend Christianity. The current administration has been widely criticized for attacking Christian values and principles, particularly when it comes to issues like abortion and same sex marriage. To hear Donald Trump, who is leading in the polls for the Republican Presidential nomination, vow to protect Christianity is greatly welcome to a largely Christian audience.
