Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau drew international ridicule last Thursday when he interrupted a woman during a town hall event and told her she was using a word that was far too masculine and non-inclusive. News of that remark went viral this Tuesday.
According to the New York Times, the woman was talking about how “Maternal love is the love that’s going to change the future of mankind.”
Trudeau cut in to warn her that, “We like to say ‘peoplekind,’ not necessarily ‘mankind.’ It’s more inclusive.”
His rebuke came a week before the newly reworded Canadian national anthem became official this Wednesday. According to Vancouver-based Global News, the new anthem has the phrase “in all of us command” instead of “in all thy sons command” in order to not be offensive to women.
Criticism for Trudeau’s “peoplekind” remark was far and wide, especially among those who find the political correctness culture just plain silly. But even some liberals took offense. The UK’s The Independent accused Trudeau of “mansplaining” to the woman. If you haven’t kept up with the ever-evolving liberal jargon, a male “mansplains” to a female when he talks to her a condescending fashion.
On Wednesday, Trudeau apologized and claimed he had simply made “a dumb joke.” But his words didn’t stem the barrage of jokes that have been made at his expense since Tuesday. Here are 12 of the most viral:
